Episode 7 ‘Fire It Up’ is all about those recipes we call on to warm us up from the inside and look after us in the colder months. First, we’ve got a simple, slow release Coconut and Buckwheat Porridge (recipe in Good + Simple), for a warming kick-start to a cold day. Buckwheat is a non-gluten, nutritious seed rich in magnesium which makes a creamy porridge and when it comes to toppings, mix it up with everything from fresh fruit to seeds, nuts or a drizzle of maple syrup.
After a visit to Meat 16, the butchers in Stoke Newington to shop for dinner and pick up some chicken carcasses and beef bones for a delicious bone broth too, we head back home to get a Slow Cooked Chicken Curry on. This must-know recipe is a perfect, no hassle, make-ahead dinner. No need to even fry an onion, just five minutes of prep, pop everything in the slow cooker before work and you’ll come home to a deliciously tender chicken curry. If you don’t have a slow cooker, or to cook the chicken more quickly, you can cook the curry in the oven or on the hob instead. Then, what really makes this curry stand out from the takeaway version is the alternative rice – simply made from cauliflower! It’s super easy, means you definitely get a good portion of veg on the plate and can be done instantly with a regular food grater or a food processor.
While supper simmers away, we head to Brockley Market and stop by Suzette Crepes, a great little stand which sells the most delicious sweet and savoury buckwheat galettes for lunch. It’s then back home to prepare the perfect sweet to our curry dinner, our Five Spice Apple Crumble. This was one of the very first puddings that got the H+H makeover so it’s very dear to us and always a family favourite. Spruced up with Chinese spices of star anise, cloves, fennel, cinnamon and Sichuan pepper, we also replace the refined ingredients in the crumble topping with almonds and a little bit of maple syrup which makes it taste even more amazing and provides the all important crunch to the cooked apples! Topped off with a some creme fraiche infused with freshly grated ginger and this is one memorable meal…
